A fun fact about yours truly? My favorite part of Christmas morning is going through my stocking. There’s something so cute and endearing about little treasures. Plus, Santa always gives me a good assortment of my favorite Christmas candy! And I love Christmas candy. In the past few years, I’ve made sure to list some stocking stuffers when shopping for Christmas, but I always end up finding some fun surprises on Christmas morning.
I think I know why I love stocking stuffers so much, and like always, it’s related to Jesus.
Nothing makes me feel closer to God than when He reveals Himself to me in a way that only I notice. Maybe I’ve been praying about something or for something, and He drops a little nugget in front of me. Years ago, I remember feeling so hollow and I was praying that God would show me He loved me. I needed that reassurance and comfort from my Father. Not five minutes after pouring out to Him in prayer, I opened my nightly devotional and the first line was, “I love you.” Literally, verbatim. Wow, what a sweet gift!
Following Jesus is so magical because it’s never boring. Even the mundane can become wonderful, exciting and a form of worship. An evening walk, a book written by a really wise person and, my favorite, a delicious meal shared with good friends have all drawn me closer to the heart of God. It really is true that His creation sings His praises and reveals His beauty.
A few weeks ago at OU/Texas, Jess, Annie and I were back together again for the first time in months. We lived together in Pi Phi for two years and then in our own house for a year, so when Annie moved away to be a rockstar for Pi Phi and I graduated, we were suddenly so separate from each other. We were sitting at Mi Cocina eating chips and dip, laughing, joking and catching up, and I straight burst into tears because my heart was so full. It hit me how much I love them, and how different we are from each other, and how much the Lord has bound us in friendship despite our differences.
What makes these normal occurrences so enchanting is the nudge you get in the depths of your soul that you know only comes from God. My heart gets lighter and I can feel just a small taste of His love for me, for all of us. There’s something about the little gifts He gives me that make me thankful for the journey I am on. This journey is hard, exhausting and scary, but when He reveals His majesty in a glimmer it smooths over everything for a second. A perfect second.
So yeah, I love stocking stuffers, but I can’t imagine a life without the little, yet massive, gifts God reveals to me at the most random times.
