There are a few things I am passionate about in life. Anti-aging skincare just happens to be one of them! Although I’m nearly 24, I have been using anti-aging skincare for 6 years. It’s something I just picked up along the way since I was very obsessed with all things make up throughout high school.
When I visit my dermatologist, she always makes sure to educate me that fair skin burns easily, which increases the chances for skin damage (i.e. wrinkles, sun spots, skin cancer). Because of this, I’ve kept with my anti-aging skincare routine for so long in order to continue preventing damage from the sun. I’m a rule-follower by nature, so it’s no surprise I took to this routine so passionately.
Because summer is quickly approaching, I thought it would be nice to do a little PSA post about taking care of your skin in the summer. We’re all outside more in the summer so it’s even more important now to put steps in place to protect not only your skin on your face, but all over your body.
I don’t think there’s anything wrong with a little sun–even I think I look better with a nice bit of tan. But I think I’d rather practice moderation and set my skin up for a healthy future than be really, really tan for a few months. I’ve embraced my pale and know that one day I’ll be so happy that 20-something Holly put on sunscreen when everyone else put on tanning lotion.
Check out my tried and true tips for protecting your skin this summer and let me know if you have any additional tips I need to know about!
Wear SPF on your face and your body
Every time you go out for an extended period of time, wear sunscreen! I wear sunscreen on my face everyday, but I’ll talk about that later. If you’re out by the pool or going for a walk without makeup on, put sunscreen on your face as well as your body! Sunscreen actually works and you’ll be surprised at how a little bit of sunscreen everyday will keep your skin young. I really think it’s the main reason why I’ve kept many fine lines away into my early- to mid-20s.
Wear a hat
Luckily, big sun hats never go out of style. If you want some extra protection from the sun’s rays on your face, ears and scalp, throw on a hat! Baseball caps don’t cover your ears, so make sure they have sunscreen on them. I know a lady who had skin cancer in her ears, so don’t neglect them! You can shop some fun hats below that will keep you protected without looking like you’re hiding from the sun.
Stick to a skincare routine in the morning and evening
I am obsessed with process and habitual routine. It makes my heart happy. I think that’s half of my success when it comes to sticking to a skincare routine. Products won’t work unless you use them, so USE THEM. I talked about my skincare routine last summer and it’s pretty much still the same. I’ve added another anti-aging serum my mom heard was supposed to be really good. Every morning I put on SPF and the anti-aging serum and every night I use a Clarisonic to exfoliate, an astringent, more anti-aging creams and a thick moisturizer. Sticking to a routine is the only way these products will work. Your skin will have a better texture, be moisturized and won’t have as much or any sun damage. If you aren’t using anti-aging products, start now!
Stay out of direct sun
I know the whole point of tanning is to be in the sun, but remember that moderation is best. I like to spend an hour laying by the pool every or every other week. I get just a little color, but not enough to burn myself. I can always hang out in the shade if everyone is still at the pool and not ready to go inside. Getting sun is good for us, but having too much of it means sunburns and skin damage. If you are going to be out in the sun all day, make sure you’re lathering up on sunscreen all over and wearing a hat. If you can avoid direct sunlight and hang out in the shade, your skin will thank you! All these anti-aging and SPF products can only work so hard. You have to help them out!
Don’t forget your lips
I think we often forget that our lips can be damaged by the sun just like our skin. In the summer, make sure you’re wearing lip balm that has SPF in it. Protecting your lips will keep them from wrinkling as fast and they also won’t be as dry all summer.
Now, go forth and be pale! No, I’m just kidding. I do hope you find these tips useful and will implement them into your life in some way. Your skin will thank you!!
