In honor of Throwback Thursday (is that still a thing?) I wanted to discuss some of my favorite movies from the 20th century. I thought it would be enjoyable for my readers who like nostalgia and maybe I can introduce the younger generation to movies that they’ve never heard of. I think that the 80s and 90s have some of the best romcoms–my favorite type of movie thanks in large part to John Hughes. So this weekend I encourage you to grab some popcorn and check out some of my favorite movies pre-Y2K.
Why I love it: Jake Ryan. That’s all. I’m joking…kind of. It’s just the quintessential high school movie because everyone can relate to at least one character.
Favorite line: “That you?” “Yeah, that me.”
Why I love it: It’s hard to not like Lloyd Dobler and his valiant efforts to win the heart of his dream girl. Plus he’s a little quirky. He loves kickboxing and has a very interesting life plan. You’ll just have to watch it to see what I mean.
Favorite line: “I got a question. If you guys know so much about women, how come you’re here at like the Gas ‘n’ Sip on a Saturday night completely alone drinking beers with no women anywhere?” “By choice, man.”
Why I love it: I’ll be honest, this movie is weird and I can’t watch it home alone or at night. It just gives me the creeps. But, that’s also why I love it. It’s kind of a horror movie wrapped up in this pretty high school package.
Favorite line: “Veronica, you look like hell.” “Yeah? I just got back.”
Why I love it: On the surface, this movie looks really shallow. However, don’t judge a book by its cover. The acting is excellent and if you don’t pay attention, you’ll miss the clever wit of the main character, Cher.
Favorite line: The entire movie. There’s too many to choose from.
Dazed and Confused
Why I love it: It’s everything that I’m not: rebellious. Honestly, there is hardly a plot and that’s what makes it so great. It’s called a “hang out” movie and that’s the perfect way to describe it.
Favorite line: “So, you’re not gonna go to law school? What do you wanna do then?” “I wanna dance!”
My Cousin Vinny
Why I love it: Few people that I’ve talked to have seen this movie, but it’s a classic. The script is witty and the stark contrast between the northerners and southerners is the reason it works so well. The trailer doesn’t do it justice in my opinion. If you need another incentive, Marisa Tomei won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for this movie.
Favorite line: Again, too many to choose from. But the part about Vinny’s pants and the deer is hysterical as well as Mona Lisa’s rant about getting married and her biological clock.
10 Things I Hate About You
Why I love it: The dad in this movie is soooo good. But Joseph Gordon-Levitt is so sweet and determined to win Bianca’s heart that it’s hard to not root for him. It’s got some Clueless-like vibes and the writing is so good. Prepare to laugh.
Favorite lines: “I’m down, I’ve got the 411, and you are not going out and getting jiggy with some boy, I don’t care how dope his ride is. My momma didn’t raise no foo’!” and “I know you can be overwhelmed, and you can be underwhelmed, but can you ever just be whelmed?” “I think you can in Europe.”
